Results of Loss of Bacteria in the Environment

Page history last edited by Sallie Gayle 15 years, 4 months ago

Lactobacillus Acidophilus affects much of the world around us. For example this bacterium produces lactose which is important to the Cori cycle. The Cori cycle occurs when muscle glycogen is broken down into lactic acid and this is then transported to the liver and converted into glucose. This glucose can then be used as energy or it can be stored in the liver. If we did not have this cycle then humans would not get sufficient energy, and our bodies would not produce the chemicals we need to survive. Another example is how Lactobacillus Acidophilus. Lactobacillus Acidophilus helps get rid of "bad bacteria". It does this by producing lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and other byproducts, when it breaks down food. These byproducts, "bad bacteria" do not like and they do not enter and reproduce with lactobacillus in the area. If we did not have lactobacillus in the area, then our bodies would be inhabited with many more bad bacteria that could cause us or other bacteria harm.
